Employee Voice

Employee voice is widely used concept on current organizations. This bridges the gap between the employees and the management by encouraging and creating space for healthy communication, settling disputes within the organization and also allows the employees views to be considered at decision making.

As per (Armstrong, 2006), it is explained Employee Voice has been addressed elaborately, where it’s mentioned “Employee voice is the term increasingly used to cover a whole variety of processes and structures while enable, and sometime power employees, directly and indirectly to contribute to decision making in the firm” (Boxall & Purcell , 2003) meanwhile Millward et al (2000) states Employee Voice as “the ability of employees to influence the actions of employers’

In the CIPD (CIPD, 2018) The Employee Voice is clarified as a method of employees expressing their views to the employer, where employees are able to impact the employer at the work place. Also, it has mentioned employee voice is two ways beneficial as the employer get the benefit of increased productivity, innovation and the employees feel a greater satisfaction and belongingness to the work place.

How Employee voice is “voiced”?

It is observed that through several chains of communication employees do express themselves in an organizations, as discussed influencing the decision making at many times. As above, this has benefits to both the employer and employee.  Below is a simple diagram which has given a the process of the employee voice and it's placemnet in an overall interest of a business.

Above Image 2 by Marchingtan et at (2002) describes the two axis of contested agenda and shared agenda of an institute. The two areas he has identified is the individual employee and the collective unions to produce the employee voice. It is explained for upward problem solving the factors are the shared agenda of participation and partnership, where as you can see the contested agenda of grievances and collective bargaining are also on the same axis, which do have interdependence of each other, as of the explanation of the framework by Marchingtan. It is also mentioned depending on the degree of the involvement direct and indirect involvement , the organization will have it's trend towards shared or contested agendas. 


Building two way communications (Dessler, 2008) explains the two ways communication allowed culture creates the fair treatment for the employees. Employees inputs are considered and at decision making so that all are aware of the process and the results and the consequences.

Also, having said the importance of two way communication in order to bring the employee voice out, it is mentioned along with the opportunity to speak up it is important that individuals take the accountability of what they have expressed too (CIPD, 2017)
