Commonly identified Leadership Styles
Having observed the styles of leadership, and also on the practical day today occurrences that we come across in our organizations, it’s no doubt that we have come across different types of leadership styles depending on different scenarios.
Many it be a change of the General Manager of the organization, an incident such as sudden fire on the office floor that we work in, a new system / procedure placed in, A newest of targets given related to a launch of selling a new product introduced, the leadership patterns emerge is different to one another. These also can be irrespective of the level you are placed in your organization too.
Generally there are few types of the types of leaderships styles identified. Below could be mentioned as the most common styles, which elaborates as Autocratic Leadership, Bureaucratic Leadership, Charismatic Leadership, Democratic Leaders, and Laissez-Faire Leadership.
1. Autocratic Leaders – “Autocratic derives from the words auto (Greek for self) and cratic” which implies rule (St Thomas University, STU Online) ,. Full control of the employees and does not let employees to contribute their ideas in decision making. These leaders emphasize to the team below that who is in charge and what needs to be done. This type of leadership makes employees discourage and may lead to turn over and absenteeism. The creativity of the team is also restricted but handling team on a critical issue and to have a greater control this style would be applicable.
2. In Bureaucratic Leadership all the rules, regulations and procedures are written. Everything done according to proper set up. This type of leadership is good when work is always having a proper routine. But this too can decrease the creativity and innovativeness of the team as the avenues to think and implement is restricted as expected to follow procedure are already in place.
3. Charismatic Leadership is mainly based on the personality and the charm of the leader, which make people like and love to follow and the team is kind of glued to the personality without any effort. These kind of leaders can inspire and gain motivation to get the work done. But in other hands the these type of leaders are shown that they are more focused on themselves rather than focusing on lifting the followers and letting them develop and growing their own ways and in the interest of the organization,
4. Democratic Leaders include employee’s ideas in their decision making. They might take the final decision but they value employee’s ideas. Employees can be motivated and made happy by a Democratic Leader. But the speed of decision making and moving forward can be slowed down under this leadership style.
5. Laissez-Faire Leaders provide ideas, advice, spend money and resources on employees and give the freedom to the team to work on their own. As mentioned this style provides the team member to set his own targets and deadlines in order to achieve the common goal. Job satisfaction of employees is shown as an advantage of this leadership. Successful with the well-educated and experienced team but can be not that useful to a team with less experience or skills who is incapable or less motivated to be on their own.
